Middlemarch, Chapter 73: riassunto

Chapter 73 di 88 · Book 8: Sunset and Sunrise · 7 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 73, Lydgate rides away from town and examines how Bulstrode’s loan compromises his independence and exposes him to suspicion over Raffles’s death. He resolves to remain in Middlemarch without denouncing Bulstrode, but dreads Rosamond’s response and chooses not to tell her about the trouble.

Cosa succede

  1. Lydgate reassures Mrs. Bulstrode about her husband’s faintness, then rides out of town to escape contact and contain his anger.
  2. He suspects Bulstrode uses the loan to secure his loyalty, but acknowledges that his suspicions may be unjust.
  3. He sees that defending himself publicly would scarcely persuade others and would deepen suspicion against Bulstrode.
  4. He questions whether financial dependence weakens his commitment to investigate possible disobedience of his medical instructions.
  5. Recognizing signs of rejection among patients and townspeople, he resolves to stay and refuses to clear himself by attacking Bulstrode.
  6. As he approaches home, he dreads Rosamond’s reaction and leaves events to disclose their trouble.
