Middlemarch, Chapter 55: riassunto

Chapter 55 di 88 · Book 6: The Widow and the Wife · 8 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 55, Dorothea grieves over her separation from Will Ladislaw and declares that she does not intend to marry again when conversation at Freshitt turns to widows and remarriage. She proposes improving land and creating a working community, while Sir James privately approves her decision to remain unmarried.

Cosa succede

  1. Dorothea treats her parting from Will as final and holds his grandmother’s miniature while grieving a love she does not recognize.
  2. During Dorothea’s visit to Freshitt, Celia removes her widow’s cap because of the heat.
  3. Mrs. Cadwallader’s remarks about remarriage provoke Lady Chettam’s objections and Sir James’s discomfort.
  4. Dorothea insists that remarriage has no personal relevance to her and refuses to let Sir James stop the discussion.
  5. In private, Dorothea tells Celia she intends to remain unmarried and develop land into a community organized around good work.
  6. Celia reports Dorothea’s decision to Sir James, who privately welcomes it.
