Middlemarch, Chapter 47: riassunto

Chapter 47 di 88 · Book 5: The Dead Hand · 9 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 47, Will Ladislaw questions his position in Middlemarch but decides to visit Lowick Church because he longs to see Dorothea. Her troubled response and Mr. Casaubon’s presence turn his hopeful outing into an ordeal, exposing the gap between his private devotion and their difficult public relations.

Cosa succede

  1. After his discussion with Lydgate, Will questions his work under Mr. Brooke but renews his resolve to remain near Dorothea.
  2. He decides to attend Lowick Church despite recognizing that Mr. Casaubon may regard the visit as defiance.
  3. Will walks through the spring countryside, singing his own verses and imagining a pleasant encounter with Dorothea.
  4. Finding the Tuckers absent, he sits alone opposite Dorothea and Mr. Casaubon and becomes painfully self-conscious.
  5. Dorothea bows with visible distress, then leaves with her husband without looking back, and Will walks home unhappily.

Cosa notare

The closing sentence connects Will’s changed mood with his changed perception of the landscape. It reverses the confidence and pleasure of his outward walk.
