Middlemarch, Chapter 32: riassunto

Chapter 32 di 88 · Book 3: Waiting for Death · 18 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 32, Peter Featherstone’s relatives gather at Stone Court to protect their hoped-for inheritances, watching Mary Garth and the Vincys while Peter refuses his siblings access. Trumbull’s evasive conversation strengthens Solomon and Jane’s suspicion that Mary receives money, although he actually knows nothing about the will.

Cosa succede

  1. Rich and poor relatives find different reasons to expect Peter’s money, but agree that they must watch one another.
  2. Mary manages the visitors, while Mrs. Vincy advises generous hospitality during Peter’s illness.
  3. Jonah and young Cranch watch Mary from the kitchen, and Fred bursts out laughing when he sees them.
  4. Solomon and Jane enter Peter’s bedroom against his orders, but he angrily dismisses them and insists that the Vincys remain.
  5. Trumbull avoids answering questions about the will, then praises Mary’s careful nursing.
  6. Solomon and Jane conclude that Mary receives a substantial legacy, although Trumbull has no knowledge of Peter’s arrangements.
