Middlemarch, Chapter 19: riassunto

Chapter 19 di 88 · Book 2: Old and Young · 6 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 19, Will Ladislaw sees Dorothea Casaubon in the Vatican, where his painter friend Adolf Naumann admires her and wants to paint her portrait. Will resists the proposal and argues that language captures women better than painting, while recognizing that his brief encounter with Dorothea affects him in ways he cannot explain.

Cosa succede

  1. During Dorothea’s wedding journey to Rome, Adolf Naumann brings Will Ladislaw to see her standing near a reclining statue.
  2. Dorothea notices the strangers and moves away to join her maid and courier.
  3. Naumann praises her beauty, proposes a portrait, and learns that her husband is Will’s second cousin.
  4. Will refuses to help arrange the portrait and argues that painting cannot capture a woman’s voice or changing presence.
  5. Naumann teases Will about jealousy, and Will privately recognizes his disproportionate irritation and new feelings concerning Dorothea.
