Madame Bovary, Chapter 3: riassunto

Chapter 3 di 35 · Part 1 · 9 min per leggere il capitolo

In Chapter 3, Charles finds comfort at the Bertaux after his wife’s death, becomes attached to Emma, and gains her father’s approval to marry her. A shutter signals Emma’s consent, and their engagement leads through winter preparations to a wedding feast rather than the torchlit ceremony she prefers.

Cosa succede

  1. Old Rouault pays Charles, consoles him about his wife’s death, and invites him to visit the Bertaux.
  2. Charles enjoys his independence and visits Emma, who shares memories, school keepsakes, and her boredom with country life.
  3. Charles decides to propose, while Rouault considers his debts and the advantages of accepting Charles as a son-in-law.
  4. At Michaelmas, Charles struggles to speak, but Rouault understands and offers to ask Emma for her consent.
  5. An opened shutter signals acceptance, and Charles returns the next morning as Emma’s future husband.
  6. After winter preparations, Emma’s wish for a torchlit ceremony gives way to a wedding with forty-three guests and prolonged feasting.

Cosa notare

Rouault turns Charles’s hesitant approach into a practical arrangement for obtaining Emma’s consent. The shutter then communicates her answer without a direct conversation between the couple.
