This collection suits readers who love adventure on the frozen frontier, stories of survival and willpower, and sharp short fiction about fairness, law and loyalty.

Che cos’è questo libro

A man stands in a milky Arctic stream and cries out to his partner. Bill does not turn his head. The man has a sprained ankle, an empty rifle and a sack heavy with gold, and hundreds of miles of bare land lie ahead. How far can a body go when the mind refuses to quit?

That scene opens Love of Life, and Other Stories by Jack London. He wrote these eight tales in the early years of the twentieth century, drawing on the Klondike gold rush. Each one puts people in a tight corner where cold, hunger, greed, love or the law forces a choice.

A starving man walks on after betrayal

Love of Life begins with a desertion. Two worn-out men wade through a stream in the Canadian barrens, heading for a food cache. One of them, Bill, will not stop when the other sprains his ankle. The hurt man is left alone with a rifle that holds no cartridges.

He tells himself that Bill will wait at the cache. He needs to believe it, because without that belief he would lie down and die. So he limps on through moss and muskeg, and his hope moves his legs.

London fills the days with small, exact acts. The man counts his sixty-seven matches and counts them again in panic. He bails a pool for half an hour to catch one minnow, then sobs when it slips away. Hunger dulls into an ache, and he eats raw minnows as an act of pure reason. All the while he carries a heavy sack of gold dust, and slowly he starts to throw it away. Then a sick wolf begins to follow his trail.

The will to live can outlast reason, comfort and even greed.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
