A chi è rivolto

You will love this book if you enjoy real family stories, journals and letters, or if Little Women made you curious about its author.

Che cos’è questo libro

What does a girl do when her family has no money, her father lives on ideals, and her own temper keeps getting in the way? Louisa May Alcott answers with a pen. In this book you meet her in a cold attic room, in a war hospital, and at her mother's bedside.

The book gathers her journals, family letters, poems, and a connecting account by a friend of the family. It runs from her birth in Germantown on November 29, 1832, to her death in Boston in 1888. Louisa annotated many entries years later, so you hear the girl and the older woman who smiles at her. You see where the March sisters come from, and the cost of the fame they brought.

Two idealistic parents shape a watchful daughter

Louisa is the second daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott and Abba May Alcott, born on her father's thirty-third birthday. Her father is a teacher with large plans for education and very little income. Her mother comes from the well-known May family of Boston. She is warm, quick to anger, and always generous.

When his Boston school fails, Bronson teaches his children at home. He draws small pictures for their lessons. One picture from 1840 shows a child playing a harp for gentle love and another drawing a bow for anger. It names the struggle Louisa will fight all her life.

Every child must keep a journal, and both parents may read it. Mrs. Alcott answers with short notes that point out a fault and then offer help. Louisa saves them for decades.

Her habit of honest self-examination starts at her parents' table.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Louisa May Alcott: vita, lettere e diari

What is Louisa May Alcott: Her Life, Letters, and Journals about?

It tells the life of the author of Little Women through her own journals, letters and poems, joined by a friend's narrative. It follows her from childhood in Boston and Concord through nursing, travel, fame and her last years.

Is Jo March based on Louisa May Alcott?

Yes, in large part. Louisa lists the true parts of Little Women herself. Beth's death, Jo's writing life, Amy's art and Meg's happy home come from her family, while Laurie is based on a Polish boy she met abroad.

Fruitlands was a farm in Harvard, Massachusetts, where her father and his friends tried to live by high ideals in 1843. They ate no meat, studied and farmed, and the plan failed. Louisa later wrote a comic story about it.

Is this book easy to read?

It is written in plain, lively language and moves through short journal entries, letters and poems. You can read a year at a time, and the humor in Louisa's own voice keeps the pages light.

What can a reader take from Louisa Alcott's life?

Her life shows how steady work, honest self-examination and love for family can turn hardship into achievement. She turns poverty, war and grief into stories that comfort readers still.
