Foil

Literary term · say it FOYL

A foil is a character whose contrast with another character makes particular traits easier to see. Differences in their choices, beliefs, or behavior can bring out qualities such as courage, pride, patience, or kindness.

Ways a foil appears

A contrasting friend or relative

A friend or relative can act as a foil by responding differently to the same people or events. Their closeness makes the contrast easy to notice.

In Pride and Prejudice, Jane tries to think kindly of Bingley's sisters after their departure, while Elizabeth suspects them of separating Jane from Bingley. Jane's generosity contrasts with Elizabeth's sharper suspicion.

A contrasting rival

A rival can also be a foil when similar pressures lead the two characters to different choices. The contrast reveals more than the fact that they oppose each other.

In Hamlet, Laertes returns after his father's death and storms the castle demanding answers. His rush toward revenge contrasts with Hamlet's hesitation and efforts to test his uncle's guilt.

In Hamlet by William Shakespeare

How to spot a foil

  1. Look for characters facing similar choices or pressures.
  2. Compare their reactions, habits, and beliefs.
  3. Ask which qualities become clearer through the contrast.

What is the difference between a foil and an antagonist?

A foil highlights another character through contrast, while an antagonist stands in the way of a character's goals. One character can serve both roles, but a foil can also be a loyal friend, sibling, or companion who causes no direct conflict.

Do foils have to be complete opposites?

Foils do not have to be complete opposites; a few important differences are enough. They may share a background, goal, or problem, yet respond differently. Those similarities can make the differences in their judgment, values, or behavior especially clear.
