Chapter 4 di 38 · 24 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 4, Jane Eyre gains a place at Lowood School, but Mrs. Reed damages her hopes by telling Mr. Brocklehurst that she is deceitful. Jane confronts Mrs. Reed about her cruelty, feels triumph followed by remorse, and finds comfort in a warmer exchange with Bessie.

Cosa succede

  1. Jane remains isolated from the Reed family, resists John’s bullying, and finds comfort in her doll and Bessie’s occasional kindness.
  2. On January fifteenth, Bessie summons Jane to meet Mr. Brocklehurst, who questions her about religion and goodness.
  3. Mrs. Reed calls Jane deceitful and requests a humble education at Lowood, where Mr. Brocklehurst agrees to accept her.
  4. After he leaves, Jane denies the accusation, condemns Mrs. Reed’s cruelty, and demands to leave for school.
  5. Jane’s excitement gives way to remorse, and neither reading nor walking outdoors relieves her distress.
  6. Bessie acknowledges Jane’s harsh treatment, promises a pleasant tea, and comforts her with affection, stories, and songs.
