Hidden Treasures is a collection of life stories written in the late 1800s for young men by Harry A. Lewis. He starts from a plain fact: seven tenths of the most successful men of the country began life poor. He follows financiers, editors, inventors and statesmen from childhood to the peak of their careers. Then he turns their habits into working rules for money, work, time and character.

Success comes from character, not luck
The book starts from a plain claim. Some people succeed and others fail, and Lewis notes that seven tenths of the most successful men began life poor. A careful look at their lives, he argues, shows habits at work, not good fortune. Luck is the word people use to excuse themselves.
Alexander T. Stewart is his test case. He arrives from Belfast at sixteen, friendless and almost penniless. He later owns a marble store that twenty-five thousand people enter each day. A small inheritance helps him. Lewis insists that he was ready to use it wisely because he had already worked and saved.
John W. MacKay gets the same treatment. The silver he finds on the Comstock Lode looks like a fortune dropped from the sky. Lewis points instead to years of failed hopes and a search through twelve hundred feet of ground at a cost of half a million dollars. Endurance keeps MacKay in the hunt.
Lewis says that will shapes circumstances instead of being ruled by them. A pound of courage, he writes, is worth a ton of luck. Life is not a lottery.
When someone succeeds, ask what that person did in the years before the break came.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.
