Chapter 40 di 59 · 21 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 40, Pip learns that his visitor is Abel Magwitch, arranges lodgings and a disguise for him, and confirms with Jaggers that Magwitch alone funds his expectations. Magwitch insists on staying despite the threat of hanging, while Pip struggles with fear and disgust until Herbert returns and takes an oath of secrecy.

Cosa succede

  1. Pip encounters a hidden man on the stairs and learns that someone appears to accompany his visitor through the gate.
  2. The visitor gives his real name as Abel Magwitch, uses Provis as an alias, and declares his intention to stay.
  3. Pip rents nearby rooms and buys clothes to conceal Magwitch, whose return exposes him to hanging.
  4. Jaggers confirms Magwitch as Pip’s sole benefactor and carefully avoids acknowledging his presence in England.
  5. Over about five days, Pip becomes increasingly frightened and repelled, while Magwitch proudly admires the gentleman he supports.
  6. Herbert returns, and Magwitch makes him swear secrecy before Pip explains the strange visitor.

Cosa notare

Jaggers challenges Pip’s assumption that Miss Havisham supplies his money. The distinction also shapes his careful refusal to acknowledge Magwitch’s presence.
