Great Expectations, Chapter 27: riassunto

Chapter 27 di 59 · 12 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 27, Joe visits Pip in London, where Pip’s embarrassment about his old companion makes their breakfast painfully awkward despite Herbert’s kindness. Joe delivers Miss Havisham’s message that Estella is home and wants to see Pip, then leaves with quiet dignity, prompting Pip to search for him in vain.

Cosa succede

  1. Biddy’s letter announces Joe’s visit, and Pip feels ashamed of the prospect despite their close ties.
  2. Pip prepares an impressive breakfast, but Joe arrives uneasy and struggles with his hat and formal manners.
  3. Joe gives Pip a playbill for Wopsle, whose acting draws interruptions from the audience.
  4. After Herbert leaves, Joe reports that Miss Havisham says Estella is home and wants to see Pip.
  5. Joe declines dinner, explains that he belongs at his forge rather than among London gentlemen, and leaves affectionately.
  6. Pip recognizes Joe’s dignity and runs after him, but cannot find him.
