Flatland, Section 19: riassunto

Section 19 di 22 · Part 2: Other Worlds “O brave new worlds, that have such people in them!” · 10 min per leggere: section

In Section 19, the Sphere teaches the Square to recognize solids, but the Square uses these lessons to argue for a fourth dimension and dimensions beyond it. The Sphere rejects his demands and threatens punishment, yet the Square keeps speaking until crashes interrupt him and he descends to his study in Flatland.

Cosa succede

  1. The Square cannot help his imprisoned brother because his movements depend entirely on the Sphere.
  2. The Sphere constructs a Cube from square cards and teaches the Square to distinguish solids through touch, lighting, and perspective.
  3. The Square asks to see the Sphere’s interior and argues that a fourth dimension makes this possible.
  4. He uses numerical patterns and reports of mysterious appearances to support his claim, but the Sphere rejects his reasoning.
  5. The Square continues demanding higher dimensions despite threats, until crashes interrupt his speech and he returns to his study.
