Flatland, Section 11: riassunto

Section 11 di 22 · Part 1: This World · 4 min per leggere: section

In Section 11, the narrator explains how Flatland’s priestly Circles govern society while concealing their actual polygonal shapes. He then describes their unusual reproduction and the dangerous medical treatment through which ambitious noble parents seek Circular status for infants, despite the deaths of most children treated.

Cosa succede

  1. The narrator announces Space as his central subject but pauses to explain the priestly rulers of Flatland.
  2. The Circles oversee public life, while social rules against touching protect the secrecy of their many-sided shapes.
  3. Circular families gain sides faster than lower classes do, but they produce very few sons.
  4. Physicians fracture and reset noble infants’ bodies to increase their sides and raise their rank.
  5. Most treated children die, but rare successes encourage more parents to risk their firstborn children.

Cosa notare

The survival rate exposes the human cost of pursuing Circular status. Rare successes still persuade parents to accept this danger.
