Fathers and Sons, Chapter 7: riassunto

Chapter 7 di 28 · 10 min per leggere il capitolo

In Chapter 7, Arkady recounts how Paul Petrovich Kirsanov abandons his promising career for Princess R and withdraws into an empty life after their separation. Arkady presents his uncle’s suffering and generosity as reasons for sympathy, but Bazarov insists that people must shape themselves rather than surrender to love or circumstances.

Cosa succede

  1. Paul becomes a successful young officer and society favorite, then falls passionately in love with the troubled, elusive Princess R.
  2. When her affection fades, Paul resigns his commission and follows her abroad, but their reunion in Baden ends in permanent separation.
  3. After ten empty years, Paul hears of her death and receives his ring back, its sphinx marked with a cross.
  4. Paul settles at Nikolai’s estate, adopting English habits and earning respect while remaining socially distant.
  5. Arkady praises his uncle’s generosity and asks Bazarov to recognize his unhappiness rather than despise him.
  6. Bazarov rejects Arkady’s defense, dismisses romantic mystery through physiology, and suggests examining a beetle.

Cosa notare

Bazarov answers Arkady’s appeal to historical circumstances by insisting on individual agency. This sharpens their disagreement over how to judge Paul.
