Che cos’è questo libro
What do you do when your enemy invites you to breakfast and then calls you his prisoner? Jean Bart, a privateer from Dunkirk, holds a match over an open barrel of gunpowder until his crew boards and captures the English ship. Scenes like this fill Famous Privateersmen and Adventurers of the Sea.
Charles H. L. Johnston wrote it for young readers. His preface calls the privateer a robber made legal by the laws of his own people. Each chapter tells one life, from Carlo Zeno of Venice to Raphael Semmes of the Alabama.

Carlo Zeno saved Venice and was jailed
Carlo Zeno, a Venetian born in 1344, was meant for the Church and became a sea fighter instead. Johnston uses his life to show that a country can owe its survival to a man it later punishes.
Zeno's fighting career brings him up against steep odds. At Tenedos he has three ships and three hundred soldiers against twenty-two Genoese galleys. He hides men in ruined houses, springs an ambush, and drives the landing party back to sea.
The larger test is the War of Chioggia. Genoa comes within sight of Venice itself. Admiral Pisani traps the enemy fleet, but his men want to go home for Christmas. On the last day, Zeno arrives with prizes and cuts off the Genoese escape canal, and the starving enemy surrenders. Venice's rulers, afraid of so strong a hero, refuse him the highest office, and years later they jail him for a year.
A nation can cheer a hero's deeds and still treat the man shamefully.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

What is Famous Privateersmen and Adventurers of the Sea about?
It is a collection of true stories about sea fighters, including Drake, Raleigh, Jean Bart, Fortunatus Wright, John Paul Jones, Surcouf, Lafitte, and Semmes. Each chapter follows one captain through his famous battles, tricks, and fate.
What is the difference between a pirate and a privateer in this book?

Is Famous Privateersmen and Adventurers of the Sea easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that each chapter is a self-contained story with lively dialogue, sound effects, and short verses. You can read one captain at a time and enjoy it, and the plain style suits young and adult readers.
