A chi è rivolto

This book is for readers who love journeys beneath the earth, secret brotherhoods and old alchemy, and who enjoy a lively argument between science and wonder.

Che cos’è questo libro

Can you be alone and yet not alone? On a stormy November night in Cincinnati, a bachelor named Llewellyn Drury bets his very soul that no one else is in his room. A soft voice answers that he has lost, and a white-haired stranger draws a long knife.

Etidorhpa, or The End of Earth, was written by John Uri Lloyd, an Ohio pharmacist and chemist. An old visitor reads Drury a manuscript about a man carried beneath Kentucky into the unknown. You get an eyeless guide, glowing mushroom forests, a boat that skims at nine hundred miles an hour, and a vision of love named Aphrodite spelled backward.

Punto chiave 1 di 11

A wager on a stormy night summons a stranger

A bleak November day in the Ohio Valley leaves Llewellyn Drury restless and gloomy. Near midnight he pulls a dictionary of Latin quotations from his shelf. His eye falls on a line saying a person is never less alone than when alone.

Drury argues with it out loud. Alone means alone, he insists, and he wagers everything he owns, even his soul, that nobody else is in the room. A soft, clear voice replies that he has lost. Across the room sits a tall white-haired man with a silver beard that falls nearly to his waist.

When Drury orders him out, the man lays a long knife on the table. Yet his calm drains away Drury's fear. He has a story in manuscript, and he wants Drury to hear it and publish it thirty years later. Then he leaves through a locked door, and the knife vanishes. A careless bet opens the door to a story that will change a life.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
