Chapter 29 of 129 · Part 1 · 19 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 29, Dorotea accepts help from Cardenio and the priest, then pretends to be a dispossessed princess to draw Don Quixote out of the mountains. Her performance secures his promise of service, and the priest joins the party, preserves the barber’s disguise, and condemns the freeing of the galley slaves without naming Don Quixote.

What happens

  1. Cardenio identifies himself to Dorotea, promises to defend her claim against Don Fernando, and joins her in accepting the priest’s help.
  2. Sancho reports Don Quixote’s refusal to leave, and Dorotea offers to impersonate a distressed princess using her knowledge of chivalric stories.
  3. As Princess Micomicona, Dorotea secures Don Quixote’s promise to accompany her and avoid other adventures until he restores her kingdom.
  4. Sancho imagines his master marrying the princess and plans to sell his own imagined black subjects in Spain.
  5. The priest disguises Cardenio, joins the travelers, and explains the barber’s fallen false beard through a supposed healing charm.
  6. The priest invents a robbery by freed galley slaves and condemns their liberator, making Don Quixote visibly uncomfortable.
