Who Little Paul is

Little Paul is a delicate, thoughtful child whose manner seems older than his years. He asks unusual questions that the adults around him cannot answer.

His father, Paul Dombey, wants him to carry on the family name and shipping firm. He loves the boy in his proud way, but values the future heir more than the child.

How Little Paul changes

Paul goes to Brighton for his health, with Florence beside him. He stays with Mrs Pipchin, whose cheerless boarding house offers little warmth to a lonely child.

His father then sends him to Doctor Blimber's school, hoping to make him strong and clever quickly. There, demanding lessons in Latin and Greek drain him, while his father's plans press upon him.

Little Paul and the others in the story

Florence is Little Paul's closest companion, caring for him in small, everyday ways. He clings to her, and her visits bring comfort during his time at school.

Toots, a cheerful older pupil at Doctor Blimber's, becomes one of Paul's few friends. These bonds show the affection Paul needs alongside the future his father imagines for him.
