In Chapter 50, Martha leads Davy to Emily’s refuge, where they overhear Rosa Dartle humiliating her and threatening to expose her unless she disappears. Mr. Peggotty arrives as Rosa leaves, receives Emily into his arms when she loses consciousness, and gives thanks that his faithful search brings him back to his darling.

Cosa succede

  1. Months pass without a clear clue, but Mr. Peggotty keeps searching and Martha asks him to remain in London.
  2. About a fortnight afterward, Martha fetches Davy and takes him to her room near Golden Square.
  3. Rosa insults Emily, dismisses her suffering, and threatens public exposure unless she leaves.
  4. Emily defends her family and says James Steerforth deceives her into trusting and loving him.
  5. Mr. Peggotty arrives as Rosa departs, and carries the unconscious Emily downstairs with grateful tenderness.
