Chapter 5 di 30 · 17 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 5, the narrator sails from Smyrna past the Troad and through the Dardanelles, linking the landscape with classical stories before reaching Constantinople. The city's distant beauty gives way to dirty, difficult streets as a guide brings him to his lodging, but curiosity soon draws him outside again.

Cosa succede

  1. Leaving Smyrna, the narrator regrets its attractive streets while acknowledging its poverty and few surviving ancient remains.
  2. The Troad prompts accounts of epic heroes, divine encounters, and disputed tombs that the captain helps him locate.
  3. The Leonidas enters the Dardanelles, takes aboard a pasha and his attendants, and leaves them at Gallipoli.
  4. After crossing the Sea of Marmara overnight, the narrator surveys Constantinople's fortifications, palaces, mosques, suburbs, and busy harbor.
  5. A recommended contact rescues him from the crowded deck, guides him through customs, and accompanies a porter carrying his trunk.
  6. Filthy streets spoil the distant city's charm, but after reaching his lodging, the narrator abandons rest and explores.
