In Chapter 15, the narrator watches Sultan Abdul-Medjid return from Friday prayers and attends a Ramadan dinner with a former pasha of Kurdistan through a new acquaintance. These encounters bring him from imperial ceremony into domestic hospitality, where religious observance, dining customs, and informed discussion of European politics shape his experience.

  5. Through an interpreter, the host questions the narrator about French politics, then prays and offers him a standing welcome.
  6. After visiting the secretary, the guests return by boat and hear Circassians discuss politics before a dervish sings.
