Constantinople, Chapter 13: riassunto

Chapter 13 di 30 · 13 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 13, the narrator explores the Cemetery of Scutari, describes burial customs, and finds that exposed human remains calm rather than frighten him. He then walks through Hyder-Pacha among women, carriages, vendors, and riders, moving from reflection on death to a strong awareness of life.

Cosa succede

  1. The narrator contrasts his fear of Christian cemeteries with the calm he feels in Turkish burial grounds.
  2. He enters Scutari’s cemetery, praises its cypresses, and describes permanent graves, decorated markers, and burial beliefs.
  3. Wandering alone through older graves, he examines exposed bones and looks through openings into tombs.
  4. The remains reassure him, and he continues walking with little fear of his own death.
  5. He rejoins his friends, passes fashionable new graves, and reaches the crowded plain of Hyder-Pacha.
  6. After observing women, carriages, vendors, and riders, he returns toward Scutari as the sun sinks.
