Candide, Chapter 8: riassunto

Chapter 8 di 30 · 4 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 8, Cunegonde tells Candide how she survives the Bulgarian attack, becomes a captive, and comes under the competing control of Don Issachar and the Grand Inquisitor. She explains that seeing Candide whipped prompts her to arrange their reunion, and their supper ends with Don Issachar’s arrival.

Cosa succede

  1. Cunegonde recounts her family’s murder, a Bulgarian soldier’s sexual assault, and the sword wound he gives her.
  2. A captain kills the soldier, takes Cunegonde prisoner, and sells her to Don Issachar after three months.
  3. The Grand Inquisitor threatens Don Issachar into sharing control of Cunegonde and the country house according to a weekly schedule.
  4. At the auto-da-fé, Cunegonde sees Pangloss hanged and Candide whipped, and rejects Pangloss’s claim that everything serves the best.
  5. She sends her old woman to help Candide and bring him to her; after the reunited pair eat, Don Issachar arrives.

Cosa notare

Cunegonde directly rejects Pangloss’s teaching after witnessing the punishments. Her account places personal suffering against his claim about universal good.
