Candide, Chapter 30: riassunto

Chapter 30 di 30 · 7 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 30, Candide marries Cunegonde after arranging the Baron’s removal, but life on their small farm brings discontent rather than happiness. After a dervish dismisses their questions and a farmer explains the benefits of labor, Candide and his companions turn to useful work instead of endless argument.

Cosa succede

  1. Candide accepts Cacambo’s plan to return the Baron to the galley captain, removing his opposition to the marriage.
  2. The household struggles with poverty, hard labor, dissatisfaction, and idle debate, while political exiles pass their farm.
  3. Paquette and Friar Giroflée arrive destitute, giving the companions more reasons to debate suffering and happiness.
  4. A dervish refuses to explain human existence or evil and shuts his door on the philosophers.
  5. An old farmer welcomes the travelers and explains how cultivating twenty acres protects his family from boredom, vice, and need.
  6. Candide adopts the farmer’s example, and the household becomes productive as everyone contributes useful skills.
