Candide, Chapter 3: riassunto

Chapter 3 di 30 · 3 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 3, Candide escapes a battle, crosses villages destroyed by both armies, and reaches Holland, where his requests for food meet threats and religious hostility. James, an Anabaptist, gives him shelter, money, and help finding work, renewing Candide’s faith in Pangloss’s teaching before he encounters a diseased beggar.

Cosa succede

  1. Candide hides during a battle that kills thousands, then leaves while both kings hold religious services.
  2. He crosses an Abarian village destroyed by Bulgarians and a Bulgarian village similarly devastated by Abarians.
  3. His food runs out in Holland, where people threaten him with the workhouse for begging.
  4. A speaker on charity refuses him bread over a religious question, and the speaker’s wife pours something from a window.
  5. James cleans and feeds Candide, gives him money, and offers to teach him fabric making.
  6. The next day, Candide encounters a beggar with severe bodily decay and a violent cough.

Cosa notare

Candide separates his immediate hunger from the speaker’s religious test. The reply exposes the gap between preaching charity and feeding someone.
