Candide, Chapter 24: riassunto

Chapter 24 di 30 · 7 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 24, Candide searches Venice for Cacambo and Cunegonde, then discovers that the apparently happy Paquette and Friar Giroflée both suffer deeply. Their accounts support Martin’s doubts about happiness, but Candide gives them money, renews his hope of finding Cunegonde, and requests a visit to Senator Pococurante.

Cosa succede

  1. With no news of Cacambo or Cunegonde, Candide falls into despair while Martin questions his servant’s loyalty.
  2. Candide sees a cheerful girl and friar, bets they are happy, and invites them to dinner.
  3. The girl identifies herself as Paquette and describes seduction, violence, imprisonment, and the misery of prostitution.
  4. Friar Giroflée explains that his parents force him into religious life, where he suffers anger, theft, and confinement.
  5. Candide accepts Martin’s victory but gives Paquette and Giroflée money, hoping to make them happy.
  6. Still searching for an example of happiness, Candide requests permission to visit Senator Pococurante the next day.
