A chi è rivolto

This is for readers who love campfires and old-fashioned know-how, for parents, leaders and teachers, and for anyone curious about how a famous movement first described its ideals.

Che cos’è questo libro

Picture a boy on a rough farm who sees a bright bird, hears a strange song from the treetops, and cannot learn its name. He has no book and no friend to ask. That ache, as Ernest Thompson Seton tells it, never left him.

Boy Scouts Handbook was issued by the Boy Scouts of America in 1911 as the official guide for patrols. Many experts wrote it, with Seton shaping the nature sections and Daniel Carter Beard advising on the whole. You get the oath and law, ranks and badges, knots, woodcraft, camping, tracking, first aid and citizenship. Together they show what a boy could become.

Punto chiave 1 di 10

A scout watches, prepares, and serves others

The handbook traces the scout back through history. An army scout stood on the skirmish line so the soldiers behind him could rest in safety. A pioneer scout guarded the stockade. If either one fell asleep, lives were at stake.

The authors widen the word to include peace scouts, such as Columbus and the Pilgrim Fathers. These men read the slightest signs in the forest and found their way by sun and stars. Chief Scout Seton adds that he loved the woods as a boy but had no one to teach him. This book is the one he longed for.

The method is called scoutcraft. It joins observation, deduction and practical skill, and it is taught through games so that it feels like fun. The book also sets a daily test. A scout does one good turn every day, quietly and without boasting, such as giving water to a thirsty horse. Being a scout means being ready and being useful.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Manuale dei Boy Scout

What is the Boy Scouts Handbook about?

It is the official 1911 guide to scouting. It teaches the oath and law, ranks and merit badges, knots, woodcraft, camping, tracking, signaling, health, first aid, games, chivalry and the duties of a citizen.

Who wrote the Boy Scouts Handbook?

The Boy Scouts of America published it, and many experts wrote its chapters. Ernest Thompson Seton, the Chief Scout, wrote on nature and tracking. John L. Alexander, Major Charles Lynch and Waldo Sherman also contributed.

What are the twelve points of the Scout Law?

A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Each point is explained briefly in the book, and a boy promises to obey them when he takes the oath.

What does Be Prepared mean in the handbook?

It means a scout is always ready in mind and body to do his duty. He has thought ahead about accidents, trained himself to obey, and made himself strong enough to do the right thing at the right moment.

Is the Boy Scouts Handbook worth reading today?

It gives a clear view of how early scouting taught outdoor skills and character. Its short sections, scenes and practical steps make it easy to dip into, and many skills, such as knots and fire building, still interest hikers.
