Questions

What are the Books of Enoch, and how do they differ?

They are three different writings associated with the biblical figure Enoch. 1 Enoch, from about 300 to 100 BC, describes rebellious angels and judgment. 2 Enoch, from about the 1st century AD, follows a journey through the heavens. 3 Enoch dates to about the 5th to 6th century AD.

Is the Book of Enoch in the Bible?

1 Enoch belongs to the biblical canon of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox churches, but it is not included in most Bibles. The answer therefore depends on which church's Bible you mean.

What does “lost” mean on this page?

Here, “lost” means left out of most Bibles, not missing. It describes these texts' place outside most biblical collections, rather than suggesting that the works themselves cannot be found or read.

Which Book of Enoch should I read first?

Start with 1 Enoch for its accounts of rebellious angels and judgment. Then try 2 Enoch for a journey through the heavens. These are different works, rather than successive parts of one book.

Does The Complete Books of Enoch bring them together?

Yes. The Complete Books of Enoch brings 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch together in one volume.

Are the other titles on this page also books about Enoch?

No. Book of Giants, The Book of Jubilees, Genesis Apocryphon, The Apocalypse of Abraham and The Ascension of Isaiah are related ancient texts, not additional Books of Enoch. Read them as related reading rather than further volumes in the same work.
