Beowulf, Part 41: riassunto

Part 41 di 43 · 5 min per leggere: part

In XLI The Messenger’s Retrospect, the messenger recounts Ongentheow’s defeat and predicts renewed Swedish attacks because Beowulf no longer protects his people. The warriors then gather beside their dead king and the dragon, where ancient treasure lies under a spell that only God can permit mortals to overcome.

Cosa succede

  1. The messenger recalls how Higelac’s warriors pursue Ongentheow and force him into battle.
  2. Wulf wounds Ongentheow, receives a severe blow himself, and survives; Eofor kills the Swedish king.
  3. Eofor brings Ongentheow’s equipment to Higelac, who rewards both brothers and gives Eofor his daughter.
  4. The messenger predicts Swedish revenge, urges funeral preparations, and describes a future of warfare and exile.
  5. The grieving warriors approach Eagle’s Cape and see Beowulf’s body, the dead dragon, and the ancient treasure.
  6. The narrator explains that magic protects the hoard and God alone grants permission to open it.
