Ben-Hur, Chapter 8: riassunto

Chapter 8 di 88 · Book 1 · 8 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 8, Joseph meets Rabbi Samuel at the Joppa Gate market, explains his marriage to Mary, and avoids joining the Rabbi’s anger over Roman taxation. Joseph and Mary then travel toward Bethlehem to be counted, reaching a khan as the crowded approaches make him fear that she may find no room.

Cosa succede

  1. Rabbi Samuel recognizes Joseph beside a donkey carrying a veiled young woman and learns that they travel to Bethlehem.
  2. Samuel condemns Roman taxation and questions Joseph about Judas, while Joseph keeps his distance from political disputes.
  3. Joseph explains that Mary is his wife and niece, and that their marriage preserves her inherited property.
  4. A stranger identifies Samuel as a zealot after the Rabbi leaves in anger.
  5. Joseph leads the donkey toward Bethlehem, recounting David’s victory while Mary often appears absorbed in prayer.
  6. Crowds near Bethlehem alarm Joseph, who hurries to a khan outside the village gates.
