Chapter 4 of 18 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 4, Georges Duroy leaves his railway job after his first article appears, learns Saint-Potin’s dishonest reporting methods, and fails to produce an acceptable continuation about Algeria. He becomes a valued reporter instead, but persistent money troubles make him determined to discover how his colleagues enrich themselves.

What happens

  1. Delighted to see his name in print, Duroy resigns from the railway office and presents himself as a journalist.
  2. Saint-Potin explains that he invents interviews by recycling old articles and checks personal details with hotel porters.
  3. Unable to finish his next article, Duroy seeks help, finds Mme. Forestier dictating to her husband, and receives an angry refusal.
  4. Duroy submits an article written in anger, collects his salary and article payment, and meets Rachel at the Folies-Bergère.
  5. Walter and Forestier each attribute the article’s rejection to the other, and repeated revisions fail.
  6. Duroy becomes a useful reporter, but his expenses consume his earnings and he resolves to uncover his colleagues’ sources of money.
