A chi è rivolto
Readers who love poetry of night city streets, pointed little fables, nineteenth century Paris and notebooks that reveal a working mind will enjoy this collection. It also suits lovers of dark beauty and daring thoughts about art.
Che cos’è questo libro
Do you know what to do when the noise of a great city becomes too much? Baudelaire's answer, in one of his shortest prose poems, is to be drunk, always, on wine, poetry or virtue, so that Time cannot crush you. It is a startling piece of advice from a writer who treated Paris as both a prison and a feast.
This book gathers the work of Charles Baudelaire, who died in 1867. It holds his prose poems, verse from The Flowers of Evil, and the private notebooks known as Rockets and My Heart Laid Bare. Every piece can stand alone, so you can begin anywhere. Along the way you meet a clown who plays for his life, a poor family staring at a café, and a swan stranded on dry paving stones.

Punto chiave 1 di 10
Baudelaire turns the modern city into poetry
The book gathers four kinds of writing by one man living in Paris: prose poems, verse from The Flowers of Evil, a few more poems, and private notes. Gaslight, new boulevards, cafés and crowds are his raw material.
In the dedication, he tells his friend Arsène Houssaye how the prose poems began. He dreams of poetic prose, musical without rhythm or rhyme, supple enough for the swings of the soul. Great cities, he says, give birth to that dream.
He also offers a simple way to read. The work is a serpent that is all head and all tail, so any piece can be cut off and still stand. No plot holds the reader by a thread.
The opening piece sets the tone. The Moon kisses a sleeping child and leaves her with green eyes, pale cheeks and a lifelong wish to weep. Beauty, for Baudelaire, always comes with a wound.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Baudelaire: prosa e poesia
What are prose poems?
Prose poems are short pieces written in plain paragraphs but built like poems, with strong images and a single mood. Baudelaire says he wanted prose that is musical without rhythm or rhyme, quick enough to follow the soul's sudden turns.
What does Correspondences mean?
It describes nature as a temple of symbols in which perfumes, colors and sounds answer one another. For Baudelaire, the senses work together, and a poet can read in one scent the memory, color and music of a whole world.
Is it easy to read Baudelaire in this collection?
Many pieces are short and stand alone, so you can open the book anywhere. The prose poems read like small scenes and fables, and the verse offers vivid images, which makes it welcoming for readers new to him.
What is the main message of Baudelaire's work?
Beauty is tied to sorrow, and the poet finds meaning by looking closely at the strange and the forgotten. The book shows dreams, art and work as the poet's answers to boredom and the weight of time.
