Aristotle on love

Questa pagina si basa sui nostri riassunti dei libri. Non è scritta da Aristotle.

Aristotle’s treatment of love was most closely connected here with his discussion of friendship and the good life. He explored friendship in his ethical inquiry and valued friends who helped people become better. This supported a connection between friendship and character, but did not provide a complete account of love. His broader concern was how people lived and acted over a whole life, rather than whether they experienced a pleasant feeling at a particular moment.

Character developed through repeated conduct

In The Ethics of Aristotle, he explained that character developed through practice. People became fair or brave through repeated actions, not good intentions alone. This explained the importance he placed on becoming better, including through friendship.

Ethical judgment depended on circumstances

Aristotle treated practical wisdom as the ability to judge what particular circumstances required. This belonged to his broader account of ethical action; it was not a separate test for deciding whether love rested on character or personal benefit.

Recognition changed feelings in drama

In The Poetics of Aristotle, he described recognition as a movement from ignorance to knowledge that could lead characters toward love or hatred. His concern there was the structure of dramatic action, rather than a general explanation of love.
