Who Roy Gardner is
Roy Gardner is a student at Redmond College in Kingsport, where Anne begins a new life away from home. He is rich, well dressed and courteous, with the good looks that appeal to Anne's romantic imagination.
He meets Anne in the rain and offers her shelter beneath his umbrella. Flowers and invitations to events follow, and Anne enjoys both his attention and her friends' excitement.
Roy Gardner and the others in the story
Roy seems to fit Anne's cherished picture of a tall, dark, handsome hero with an air of mystery. Philippa Gordon, Anne's close friend, watches their courtship with particular interest.
Yet Anne sometimes feels restless, even while she takes pleasure in Roy's attentions. Their courtship brings a distinction into focus for her, the difference between feeling admired and feeling love. Roy's apparent likeness to her imagined hero makes that distinction less simple than she expects.
