Che cos’è questo libro

The book is A Boy's Voyage Round the World, credited to Samuel Smiles. It is told from his daily log and written for the family he left behind. You get gales, a burned ship's survivors, a bank clerk's life in a gold town, floods, and the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Honolulu and Chicago.

Punto chiave 1 di 11

A cold start and a Channel gale

The book opens at Gravesend, where the young traveller says his last goodbyes. The deck of the Yorkshire is a muddle of stores and hen coops. Sleet falls, and a milk cow named Molly is hoisted over the side and lowered to her stall.

Below decks his cabin has a swinging lamp and a shelf of favourite books. Off Brighton the sea is calm, but old hands warn him that this peace is only weather-breeding. They are right.

The wind swings round and blows a gale from the southwest. Books fall from his shelf, and the mainsail blows out of its ropes with a bang like a gun. Then the crew sees the Rosa, a barque abandoned and sinking, and sails on.

A voyage begins with discomfort, and the sea gives and takes in the same afternoon.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
