Who Henry Fleming is

Henry grows up reading about heroes and imagining war as a place for grand deeds. Life in camp brings drilling, cooking and waiting instead, giving him time to worry about whether he will run. He watches the other soldiers for signs of fear, while keeping his own doubts to himself.

What Henry Fleming wants

Henry wants to see himself as a hero and to have others recognize his courage. When he meets wounded soldiers, he envies the visible proof that they have faced the fighting. His longing for a wound grows from shame, exposing how much appearances matter to him.

How Henry Fleming changes

Henry holds his ground during the first attack and feels proud of passing the test he fears. When another attack breaks his nerve, he runs and tries to convince himself that escape makes sense. His confidence and guilt reveal a boy whose actions do not fit his simple picture of bravery.
