The Prince – Chapter 19 összefoglaló

Chapter 19 / 28 · 14 perc a fejezet elolvasására

In Chapter 19, the argument explains how a prince protects his rule by avoiding hatred and contempt, especially through respect for property, firmness, and popular goodwill. Examples from Bologna, France, and the Roman emperors show that survival also depends on satisfying powerful groups and adapting conduct to the conditions of rule.

Mi történik?

  1. A prince avoids hatred by respecting property and women, and avoids contempt by appearing firm, courageous, and serious.
  2. Popular goodwill discourages conspirators, as Bologna’s revenge against the Canneschi demonstrates.
  3. France’s parliament restrains nobles and protects ordinary people while shielding the king from blame.
  4. The Roman emperors face conflicting demands from peaceful subjects and greedy soldiers, making support from the strongest group essential.
  5. Marcus and Severus preserve authority through different methods, while other emperors fall through hatred, contempt, or personal threats.
  6. The argument concludes that new princes should combine Severus’s methods of establishing power with Marcus’s methods of maintaining stability.

Mire figyelj

Pertinax’s attempt to reform the soldiers makes them hostile. The line separates moral goodness from political security and explains why a ruler must consider the interests of essential supporters.
