The fall from Olympus

Stories differ about his fall from heaven. In one account, Zeus throws him from Olympus when he tries to protect Hera.

In The Iliad, Hephaestus recalls Zeus throwing him down after he intervened for Hera. He tells the story while urging his mother not to provoke Zeus again.

In The Iliad by Homer

The armour of Achilles

Hephaestus makes new armour for Achilles at the request of the hero’s mother, Thetis. Its greatest wonder is a shield covered with scenes of human life.

In The Iliad, Thetis visits Hephaestus after Achilles loses his armour through Patroclus’s death. The god forges a shield showing cities, farming, dancing, and other scenes beyond the battlefield.

In The Iliad by Homer

The trap for Aphrodite and Ares

In the most common version, Aphrodite is Hephaestus’s wife and secretly meets Ares. Hephaestus catches them together in a fine metal net and calls the other gods to witness their shame.

In The Odyssey, the singer Demodocus tells this story while Odysseus is among the Phaeacians. Hephaestus’s hidden trap turns the lovers’ secret meeting into a public embarrassment.

In The Odyssey by Homer

Héphaisztosz ugyanaz, mint Vulcanus?

Vulcan a római isten, akit rendszerint Héphaisztosszal azonosítanak.
