  1. Ptolemy mocks the severed head of Harmachis’s foster-brother and orders a woman killed when her reply frightens him.
  2. At seventeen, Harmachis accepts a rival’s challenge to hunt a lion despite his father’s prohibition.
  3. The rival wounds the lion, flees, and dies under its paw; Harmachis kills it with his spear.
  4. Atoua calls Harmachis Pharaoh and interprets the deaths as signs of victory over foreign rulers, conditional on resisting temptation.
  5. Atoua treats his scratches and disguises her prophecy as foolish chatter when a spy questions her.
  6. The deceived spy arranges the removal of the bodies and the skinning of the lion, while Harmachis returns home puzzled.
