About this book
What does it take to keep demanding a voice when your country refuses to hear you?
In Susan B. Anthony, Alma Lutz follows a village schoolteacher into the long struggle for women's rights. The story begins in a Quaker home in Massachusetts, where a daughter learns that she counts. Temperance work and the fight against slavery draw Anthony into public life, where conviction must become the practical work of organizing, speaking, and raising money.
Her partnership with Elizabeth Cady Stanton brings shared purpose to a campaign marked by quarrels and setbacks. When Anthony votes in 1872, she faces arrest and trial. Lutz, herself a supporter of women's rights, tells this life with warmth and admiration, showing the personal cost of persistence and the effort behind a public demand for equal political rights.

In short
Susan B. Anthony spent more than fifty years asking one plain question of her country: why should half its citizens have no vote?
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Quaker home gives her a conscience
Susan Brownell Anthony was born in 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. Her father, Daniel Anthony, ran a cotton mill, and her family belonged to the Quakers. The Quakers of that time held that every person carries an inner light, and they did not keep women silent in their meetings. That belief shaped the girl more than any lesson in a schoolroom.
Daniel Anthony was strict about plain living, but he also wanted his daughters educated. When a local teacher would not teach his daughter the harder parts of arithmetic, he arranged for her to learn elsewhere. The family later moved to New York State, and in time settled near Rochester. Rochester would stay her home for the rest of her life.
