About this book
A mother's warning, a tempting garden, and a rabbit who cannot resist: small adventures carry real danger here.
In A Collection of Beatrix Potter Stories, animals wear coats and shawls, keep house, and get into trouble. The Tale of Peter Rabbit begins beneath a fir tree, where Mrs. Rabbit warns her children away from Mr. McGregor's garden. Peter wants a good meal, but the gardener fiercely guards his vegetables.
The Tale of Benjamin Bunny brings Peter's confident cousin into the garden to recover his lost clothes. The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck follows a duck seeking a nest of her own. In The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Lucie's search for missing clothes leads her to a hedgehog washerwoman. Each short tale gives its creatures clear wants and small dangers.

In short
Beatrix Potter wrote and painted small books for small hands. Her animals wear coats and shawls, keep house, and get into trouble very much as children do.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A warning given, and a garden entered
The Tale of Peter Rabbit opens with a family under a big fir tree. There are four young rabbits named Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton-tail and Peter. Their mother is a widow who earns a living by selling things she makes. One morning she tells the children they may play in the fields or down the lane, but they must not go into Mr. McGregor's garden.
She gives a reason, and it is a grim one. Their father had an accident there, and Mrs. McGregor put him in a pie. Potter says this plainly and moves on, which is part of her charm. She never talks down to a child, and she trusts the listener to feel the danger without a lecture.
