About this book
What if your neighbor’s laughter becomes the one thing you cannot bear?
In Jack London’s Moon-Face and Other Stories, strong desires take a dark hold. A farmer nurses his hatred of cheerful John Claverhouse in Moon-Face. In The Minions of Midas, a secret group demands money from the rich, turning private ambition into public fear.
The Shadow and the Flash follows rival cousins Lloyd Inwood and Paul Tichlorne as they pursue invisibility by opposite methods. All Gold Canyon takes you into a hidden valley with an old prospector, while The Leopard Man’s Story enters the circus. Across these tales, London explores what money, pride and obsession do to people.

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A smiling neighbor becomes a target
The title story, Moon-Face, is told in the first person by a farmer who hates the man next door. The neighbor is John Claverhouse, a round, beaming man whose face the narrator compares to the moon. Claverhouse is cheerful, friendly and loud with laughter. For most people, those would be good qualities. For the narrator, they are an insult that he cannot bear.
What makes the story unsettling is the voice. The narrator does not rage or shout. He speaks calmly, even reasonably, as a man explaining a sensible decision to a friend. He lays out how his dislike began with small irritations and then fed on itself until it filled his days. The more Claverhouse laughs, the more certain the narrator becomes that something must be done.
