About this book
What happens when money, family duty and desire pull people in different directions?
In Stories to Enlighten the World, Feng Menglong explores morality, wisdom and human nature through short tales. Merchants, scholars, wives, monks, officials, thieves and lovers share a world where choices carry moral weight. Money presses against loyalty, desire tests duty, and the search for justice brings ordinary lives before those who hold power.
These tales explore the ties between children and parents, husbands and wives, masters and servants. Their subjects include the power of money, the bonds of family and friendship, and the work of judges. Through them, Feng offers a lively picture of Chinese life before and during his own late Ming world, inviting readers to see themselves more clearly.

These tales were made to be heard
The stories in this tradition grow out of the professional storyteller. In Chinese towns, performers drew crowds in marketplaces and teahouses. They told tales of love, crime, ghosts and clever judges. Their audience was not made up only of scholars. It included merchants, craftsmen, shopkeepers and their families.
Written tales of this kind keep the marks of the spoken word. The narrator speaks directly to the listener and steps in to comment on what is happening. He sometimes pauses to explain a custom or to warn about a mistake a character is about to make. This gives the tales a friendly, teacherly tone. You feel that someone is leading you through the story and pointing out what matters.

Who was Feng Menglong?
Feng Menglong was a late Ming dynasty scholar, editor and writer who died in 1646. He is best known for three collections of vernacular stories called the Three Words, which together hold one hundred and twenty tales.
Are the stories true or invented?
They are fiction. Feng reworked older tales from storytellers and earlier writings, and he wrote others himself. Many reflect real social conditions of the late Ming period, such as trade, debt and family duty, but the plots are not history.
