About this book

What if the best person to uncover a hidden truth is the one who cannot see?

Max Carrados is wealthy, well-read and calm in the face of puzzles that defeat people with perfect eyesight. In Ernest Bramah's eight detective stories, he listens, touches, smells and reasons his way toward the truth. His old friend Louis Carlyle, a private inquiry agent, brings baffling cases to his door, with clients who need answers they cannot find alone.

The mysteries lead through the everyday world of Edwardian England: houses, railways, theaters and rented flats, where respectable people have something to hide. In The Game Played in the Dark, darkness gives Carrados no disadvantage at all. Across the collection, the question is not simply who commits a crime, but what others overlook when they trust their eyes.

What you’ll discover

  • A detective worth knowing Meet a confident gentleman whose warmth and dry humor make clever reasoning a pleasure.
  • Clues beyond the visible Follow hearing, touch and smell toward answers that eyesight alone cannot supply.
  • Secrets behind respectable doors Explore familiar places where ordinary people bring fears, puzzles and hidden troubles.
  • A friendship built on puzzles Watch Carlyle bring difficult cases to an old friend with a different approach.
  • A fresh way to notice Discover the idea beneath the mysteries: perception means more than the ability to see.

Is it for you?

This book suits you if you enjoy short, clever mysteries, Edwardian London, or detectives who solve cases by reasoning rather than chases. It may suit you less if you want modern pace, graphic crime or long, tangled plots.
