About this book
Can a queen keep her crown without staining her conscience?
At Fotheringay Castle, Mary Stuart waits under guard, stripped of her throne but determined to keep her dignity. Her jailer, Sir Amias Paulet, searches her rooms and takes her papers. His nephew Mortimer secretly longs to free her. In Friedrich Schiller’s five-act tragedy, the captive Queen of Scots faces danger from both political calculation and passionate devotion.
At the English court, Elizabeth I holds the power Mary has lost, yet fears the cost of using it. Lord Burleigh presses for Mary’s death; the Earl of Shrewsbury urges mercy. Between the queens moves Leicester, charming and intent on protecting himself. Their arguments lead toward the play’s great garden meeting, where royal pride meets the struggle to survive.

In short
Mary Stuart is a play in five acts by the German writer Friedrich Schiller. He finished it in 1800, and it was first staged that year in Weimar.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A queen waits in Fotheringay Castle
The play opens inside Fotheringay Castle, where Mary Stuart is now held prisoner. Her jailer is Sir Amias Paulet, a stern Puritan who searches her rooms and takes her papers. Her old nurse, Hanna Kennedy, stays at her side and complains of the cruel treatment. Mary has just lost her jewels and her last letters, and the guards treat her as a danger, not as a queen.
The situation behind this scene is simple. Mary fled Scotland and sought shelter in England, but Elizabeth has kept her locked up. Now a court of English noblemen has tried her and found her guilty of plotting against Elizabeth's life. The sentence is death, and it waits only for the English queen to approve it. Mary has not been allowed to defend herself in front of Elizabeth, and she knows that the court was not on her side.

What is Mary Stuart by Schiller about?
It tells of the last days of Mary, Queen of Scots, imprisoned in England by her cousin Elizabeth I. It follows the plots, the political arguments and a fateful meeting of the two queens.
Did Mary and Elizabeth really meet?
No. Historically the two queens never met face to face. Schiller invented the garden meeting because the drama needed it, and it became the best known scene of the play.
When was Mary Stuart written?
Schiller finished it in 1800, and it was first performed in Weimar that year. It is based on real events from the sixteenth century but shaped freely for the stage.
