About this book

What if a journey through fire, ice and darkness changes everything a man values?

In Bede’s The Vision of Drythelm, a devout householder in Northumbria falls ill and dies. His wife watches beside his body through the night. According to the account, he wakes at dawn with a story of an unseen world, where a shining guide leads him through places of terror and hope.

The journey moves through a valley of fire and ice, past a dark pit, toward a flowery meadow and a wall of light. Bede places this short vision in Book Five of his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, presenting it as a lesson about repentance, purification and the consequences of earthly choices.

What you’ll discover

  • A guide through darkness Follow the bright-faced figure whose presence offers Drythelm protection amid the vision’s dangers.
  • Fire beside piercing ice Enter a stark valley where extremes of heat and cold give spiritual suffering a vivid shape.
  • The threatening pit Encounter the account’s evil spirits, whose burning tongs threaten Drythelm but cannot touch him.
  • Flowers and distant light Discover a meadow of waiting souls and an immense wall without door or window.
  • An early Christian vision Explore how Bede’s account connects the soul’s journey with repentance, divine justice and mercy.
