About this book
A voice speaks from before the beginning, then enters a world of rulers, matter and spiritual sleep.
Trimorphic Protennoia is an anonymous religious text linked to the Sethian Gnostic tradition. Its title means “three-formed first thought.” Across three discourses, a divine speaker named Protennoia describes her descent into the world as Voice, Speech and Word. According to the text, she brings awareness and saving knowledge to those caught in the lower powers’ world.
The first discourse presents Voice before all things. The second follows Speech into the lower regions, while the third presents Word in human likeness. This final discourse echoes the opening of the Gospel of John. Rather than a plain narrative or a step-by-step argument, the book offers poetic, repeating speech about divine presence, hidden knowledge and rescue.

In short
Trimorphic Protennoia is an anonymous religious text from the ancient Mediterranean world. The title is Greek and means the three-formed first thought.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Coptic book from the Egyptian desert
In 1945 a group of ancient books was found near Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt. They were papyrus codices, which are early books with pages, and they held more than fifty texts in Coptic. Many were Gnostic works that had been lost for centuries or known only through the complaints of their opponents. Trimorphic Protennoia stands in the last of these books, known as Codex XIII.
That codex is in poor shape. Only some of its leaves have survived, and the opening of the text is damaged, so a few lines are missing or uncertain. Scholars piece the sense together from what remains and from parallels in other Sethian writings. The ancient scribe's title for the work comes at the end, and the modern name draws on it.
