About this book
On damaged pages, the Savior speaks, his apostles question him, and the meaning of the cross comes into view.
The Gospel of the Savior is an anonymous early Christian dialogue that places Jesus with his apostles in the days before his death. They answer, question and sometimes plead with him. According to the text, his coming suffering carries meaning for salvation, giving these exchanges a sense of urgency.
The work survives in Coptic, the language of Christian Egypt, on badly damaged leaves. Many lines are lost, so this is not a complete, continuous story. Yet its surviving passages bring together teaching, prayer and the disciples’ questions, offering a glimpse of how Jesus is remembered outside the New Testament.

A gospel pieced together from fragments
The Gospel of the Savior reached modern scholars in pieces. A Coptic codex, now in the Berlin collection, preserves most of what we have. Its pages are torn, with gaps at the edges and in the middle, so many sentences break off. A few leaves of the same work, held in Strasbourg, were later recognized as part of it.
The manuscript is written in Coptic, the last stage of the Egyptian language, written mostly in Greek letters. Scholars generally think the Coptic copy was made several centuries after Jesus, probably in the fourth to sixth centuries. Many believe it translates an earlier Greek original, though that is an inference and not proven.
